What’s included: everything your ticket covers

Four stops along the old spur line, and everything in them, for twelve hours. No room is extra and nothing is rented by the chair. Tear off a stub to jump to it.

The Freight Room

One long limewashed brick room, built in 1909 for cotton bales and pecan sacks headed for the main line. Della stencilled the concrete floor by hand over the winter of 2018: 41 gallons of paint and one 18-inch stencil. Four freight doors roll open onto the Platform.

The Agent’s Office

The station agent sold tickets through that window until 1958. Now it’s where you get ready, on the original pine floor with the hand-truck tracks still in it, with the door shut and a tray from your caterer.

The Platform

The old loading dock: 140 feet, roofed end to end and strung with lights, four feet above the grass. Cocktail hour on a good night, the rain plan on a wet one. A ramp at the west end keeps it step-free, and the fire pit at the east end burns oak Ray splits himself.

Milepost 12

Where the rails stop, a quarter mile out along the old rail bed through forty acres of bluestem. The chairs face west, so the light is behind your guests and on you. Ray turns the old signal lamp green when it’s time to walk.

Service notice: if it rains

The ceremony moves inside with the freight doors open, and the room is flipped for supper while you’re on the Platform. It’s on the ticket.

  1. Noon: Della calls you, and you decide together. Nobody is guessing at four.
  2. 4:30 pm: Ceremony in the Freight Room, all four freight doors open to the prairie.
  3. 5:00 pm: Cocktails on the covered Platform while the crew sets supper. About forty minutes.

Not on the ticket: what you bring.

  • A licensed caterer, any one you like
  • A licensed, insured bartender
  • Music
  • Flowers
  • Your photographer

No vendor fee and no list you have to pick from.

The usual questions

Is it really all in?

Yes. The price on the board is the venue invoice. Your caterer, bar, music, flowers and photographer are separate because you choose them.

Can we bring our own caterer?

Any licensed caterer, with no vendor fee. Alcohol must be served by a licensed, insured bartender. We’ll share a list of people who know the kitchen, but you’re not tied to it.

How many guests can we have?

180 for a seated dinner in the Freight Room, 220 standing, and 220 for the ceremony at Milepost 12.

Is it accessible?

The Freight Room, the Platform and the restrooms are step-free. The cart takes anyone out to Milepost 12, and there’s room on the aisle for wheelchairs.

When does the music stop?

At 11 pm on Fridays and Saturdays, 9 pm on Sundays. The neighbors are a long way off, but sound carries over open prairie.
